Hardcastle Crags, the wooded Pennine Valley owned by the National Trust, covers 400 acres and has 15 miles of trails through upland meadows and beech and pine woods with the Crags; magnificent rugged rock formations, protruding from the coppices. A tour of the 19th Century Gibson Mill tells the history of the valley and offers a place to rest and recharge after exploring the deep rocky ravines.

Midgehole Working Men’s Club, founded at the beginning of the 20th Century, was originally built as a worker’s cottage for the employees of Midgehole Dye Works. The monument we see today, designed by local architect James Green in 1856, replaced an earlier structure built in 1815 which commemorated the defeat of Napoleon and the surrender of Paris. Climb the 39 steps to the balcony to take in the panoramic views of the Upper Calder Valley.

People’s Park is one of the finest surviving examples of a Joseph Paxton Park in the country. Created in 1857 to ‘arrange art and nature’ for the working people of Halifax, the 12.5-acre park still provides a green and pleasant haven for a ‘stroll there after they have done the hard day’s toil’.

The restored rooms display grand collections of furniture, paintings and decorative art – including an impressive stained-glass window by Morris and Co. The glass pavilion houses a variety of exotic plants, the centrepiece of which is an impressive Norfolk Island pine in the beautiful glass dome.
