CASTLEFORD SUBWAY POSTERS (2026)

A new artwork installation in the subway at Castleford Train Station that celebrates the heritage, culture, community and landscape of the town.

The project was inspired by the work of Frank Pick and the iconic graphic posters of the London Underground that promoted local sites, commerce and leisure opportunities to people as they were passing to get their trains. Ellie collected memories from members of the community and extensively researched and recorded the local archives, to build and develop a collection of poster designs that interpret Castleford's identity in her distinctive graphic style.

The final installation in the 40-metre pedestrian subway features 66 large-scale, framed posters that showcase a visual timeline of Castleford, celebrating everything from its industrial roots, to its sporting legacy and cultural events and the people and places that have shaped the town over time.

Castleford Subway Posters (2026) was commissioned by Network Rail and Wakefield Council as part of the First and Last Mile scheme, which was designed to improve the user experience of travelling to and from Castleford Train Station and strengthen the connections between the station and the town centre.

Ellie hopes that by transforming the subway into a colourful gallery of local stories, the final installation celebrates Castleford's past, present and future whilst also creating a more welcoming and engaging space for residents, commuters and visitors alike.

THANK YOU to Dave Wilders, Lucy Bellwood and the Castleford Library/Museum team, Castleford Tigers, Queen's Mill, Thomas Fawcett & Sons and all the members of the community in Castleford that contributed and assisted with the research for the project.

A special THANK YOU to The Sign Gallery in Wakefield, Adam Morley and the Ace Metalworx team in Castleford for collaborating, fabricating and installing the final artworks.
